Aave V3

Aave V3 is the most-used lending protocol in DeFi, accounting for double-digit percentages of total ecosystem TVL since its launch in 2022. Users supply assets to earn interest, or borrow against deposited collateral subject to per-asset loan-to-value limits. Interest rates float dynamically with utilization: when most of a pool is lent out, supply rates rise to attract more deposits and borrow rates rise to discourage further borrowing.

The V3 architecture was a substantial rewrite that introduced isolation mode (high-risk assets can only borrow stablecoins), efficiency mode (boosted LTVs for correlated assets like staked-ETH variants), and gas-optimized cross-chain deployments. As of 2026, Aave V3 runs on most major EVM chains, with Ethereum mainnet still holding the bulk of TVL.

From a risk perspective, Aave is one of the few protocols that has earned “blue-chip” status the hard way: years of public exploits attempted, all repelled by the layered safety net (oracle redundancy, governance pause guardian, the Safety Module backed by staked AAVE tokens that can be slashed to cover deficits). The protocol has been audited by Trail of Bits, OpenZeppelin, SigmaPrime, and Certora, with public reports on every major version.
