Editorial overview
Last reviewed 2026-05-19Uniswap V3 is the dominant decentralized exchange on Ethereum and most major L2s, introducing the concentrated liquidity AMM design that has since become the standard for capital-efficient on-chain trading. Liquidity providers choose a specific price range to deposit within rather than supplying across the full curve, which can produce 10-100× higher fee earnings per dollar deployed compared to the older constant-product model - at the cost of earning nothing when the asset price moves outside the chosen range and concentrated impermanent loss inside it.
The protocol runs three default fee tiers (0.05% for stablecoin pairs, 0.30% for established pairs, 1.00% for exotic pairs) plus governance-enabled tiers for specific pools. Each LP position is represented as a non-fungible (ERC-721) NFT rather than a fungible token, which makes it impossible to deposit a Uniswap V3 LP into a standard yield aggregator without an intermediary that wraps the position. Active liquidity management - manually or via vaults like Arrakis, Gamma, or Maverick - has become a significant sub-industry around V3 because uncared-for positions drift out of range and stop earning.
Audits include Trail of Bits, ABDK, and the original Consensys Diligence review of the V3 core; the protocol has run continuously since 2021 with no contract-level exploits on the core. The governance token UNI is one of the most-distributed in DeFi but until very recently had no fee accrual to holders - a “fee switch” proposal has been live in governance since 2024 and remains contentious. Primary risk vectors for LPs are impermanent loss (concentrated, can permanently exceed fee income on volatile pairs), oracle manipulation against pools used elsewhere as a price source, and smart-contract risk in the active-management wrapper of choice.
